Just go into the package manager and search for kubuntu-desktop
Install the package and that will install the entire base system of kubuntu.
No need to back up your data and do a fresh install.

You dont need any backup anything, you will find all your data in the same place /home and /home/Desktop.
We can install KDE envirnment by : System > Administration > Synaptic
Search Kubuntu-desktop and install it. This package depends on all of the packages in the Kubuntu desktop system. Installing this package will include the default Kubuntu KDE installation.

Add the cd to the sources list and install it from the disk.
system>administration>software sources then go to the third party software tab and select add cd.
Then select the kubuntu-desktop package
