change from gnome to kde

Asked by alec strom on 2011-02-21

I want to change from Gnome to KDE in Ubuntu 10.10. Can this be done?
I've done a search for KDE Desktop in Synaptic but not sure what to download.

Install the package called "kubuntu-desktop". Then you'll have both GNOME and KDE, and when you log on, you can choose which one you want--the last desktop session type will be remembered. (After installing that package, you can also change the default on the login screen in System > Administration > Login Screen.

But mind you, installing kubuntu-desktop will let you have both the applications for Ubuntu and Kubuntu all under the same menu. If you want, you can install Kubuntu side-by-side with Ubuntu. But if you want to switch to pure KDE, then follow the instructions here

Please note also that if you choose to remove GNOME, the instructions at should be followed from within a KDE session, *after* you have installed kubuntu-desktop. Also, the manual removal instructions on that page unfortunately are not current for Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 10.10.
