change from gnome to kde

Asked by alec strom

I want to change from Gnome to KDE in Ubuntu 10.10. Can this be done?
I've done a search for KDE Desktop in Synaptic but not sure what to download.

Install the package called "kubuntu-desktop". Then you'll have both GNOME and KDE, and when you log on, you can choose which one you want--the last desktop session type will be remembered. (After installing that package, you can also change the default on the login screen in System > Administration > Login Screen.

But mind you, installing kubuntu-desktop will let you have both the applications for Ubuntu and Kubuntu all under the same menu. If you want, you can install Kubuntu side-by-side with Ubuntu. But if you want to switch to pure KDE, then follow the instructions here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PureKDE

Please note also that if you choose to remove GNOME, the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PureKDE should be followed from within a KDE session, *after* you have installed kubuntu-desktop. Also, the manual removal instructions on that page unfortunately are not current for Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 10.10.
