If you would like to kill ktorrent go to "System > Administration > System Monitor" and in the "Process" tab right click ktorrent an choose "Kill Process" this should put an end to the resources it was hogging.

As for the error could you provide more information on what you were doing when the program crashed. You may also wish to check in "/home/[username]/.kde/share/apps/ktorrent" (show hidden files) for any error logs that may be present and post the contents if possible.

When a torrent client dies, and you restart it, it has to check the file (or files) for consistency before it starts downloading again. If they are very large files, or there are lot of them then it is going to take a while to do that. Whilst it does it you disk will go nutty. It's working as designed.
