Ktorrent speed issues

Asked by Jace

I am running ubuntu and ktorrent. I am a day old at ubuntu, but its night and day to windows, i absolutely love it, still trying to get a bunch of compiz fusion plugins to work..

anyway, i am having a problem. When i am downloading a torrent, i can get speeds pretty high, but it goes up and down really fast, and 95% of peers i get around 3-10kb a piece. Torrent works fine on windows, but for some reason this is just not acting right.

Also i am plugged straight into my modem, no router. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Jace..

Download speeds can vary based on the torrent being downloaded (how many people are seeding/downloading at the same time as you). Also, your ISP may be throttling your torrent download speed. This link has a pretty good list of ISPs and how they treat torrent downloading: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs

That being said, if you're ISP isn't slowing your torrents, maybe something else is. Are you using a wired/wireless router? If so, what kind? I have had issues with Linksys routers (I tested it out on a specimen router) which say they support UPnP (Automatic Port Mapping), but don't do it very well. You may need to log into your router and forward your torrent port..

Also by default ubuntu doesnt allow incoming connections..

Try to open up ports

to do that give the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)

sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 6881 -j ACCEPT

this is the port that the built in ubuntu bittorrent client uses, so I gave it as an example (it might be even 10000 or even 50000.. ;-))

Hope it helps

Bhavani Shankar.
