So you're trying to play a .torrent file, right? The Torrent file itself it not a video file. It's quite hard to explain, but a torrent file is a file that contains information about a server (called a tracker) that will mediate exchanges between people interested in sharing that certain file. But you don't really need to know much about all of that to use it. You can open it with a Torrent client (like KTorrent), which will take care of the downloading process for you. What should result from that is a video file that would play on your computer (assuming you have the codec for that specific video, but that's an other issue entirely).

lets assume i have the codec...how do i PLAY the movie?...it is not intuitive...it does not say "play" anywhere.
I use vlc as preferred video player...
Install it, open a terminal form menu Applications-
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install vlc
give your user password, when you digit your password you don't see any chars on the screen, then press enter
when you have downloaded the video file open Resource select your video right click with mouse and select open with and select or type /usr/bin/vlc
