This neatly deals with copywrite issues for you country, where-ever you happen to be. In my country i can use all the non-free components without needing to pay anything although i believe there is more need to be more cautious in the USA.

Hopefully the Medibuntu guide should sort any other multimedia issues at the same time as sorting the dvd playing issue :)
