Can't set password in kphotoalbum

Asked by Chris Reeve

Hi, I have just updated kphotoalbum from 3 to 4.0. I'm running eeebuntu base 3.0. I am still quite new to kphotoalbum but have already set up a lot of tags. My problem:

I selected some photos to be "locked away" and then selected "lock images". Although I had not set a password, kphotoalbum asked for one when I tried to unlock the photos again. I looked in my index.xml file and I cannot see a password anywhere in it.

I tried renaming index.xml, restarting kphotoalbum and setting a new album folder. kphotoalbum was no longer locked so I tried setting a password. It asked for an old password to do this, which of course I had not set so don't have.

My current status is that I have accidentally locked away all of my photos of my girlfriend when I only meant to lock a few. Can anyone help me find the default password know of a way for turning off the password with a hack?

Cheers,

Chris.

if you run the app with:

kdesudo kphotoalbum

does it allow you to remove the lock?

Never understood an app that locks data away from its owner, makes no sense at all.

I don't have kdesudo but I ran "sudo kphotoalbum" from the terminal and when trying to unlock it it still required a password.

The reason for the lock is so that you can store embarrassing photos in the manager and you don't have to worry about a friend seeing thumb nails of you nude while you are browsing for photos you want to show them... At the moment I don't have any such photos that are not encrypted and was just playing with the software.

I had never intended to password protect the 'locked' photos and I think it is probably a bug that I have come across because I never set a password. According to the manual the password is stored in ascii in the file index.xml, but I don't see it so I don't believe the password is actually set. The lock status must be stored somewhere else because it is not reset if I delete index.xml.

Should I file a bug report? Any other ideas how I can turn off the lock? I'll try re-installing maybe, but I expect it is simply set in another acsii file somewhere.

you dont run gui apps with sudo, you will ruin file permissions and ownerships

gnome uses gksudo and kde uses kdesudo to run gui apps.

Here is why not:

I would log a bug for definate. If you open the pics in another app then is the data accessible?

Yes, kphotoalbum does not encrypt the photos.

I have finally found the file that sets the lock status: kphotoalbumrc, so I guess my problem is now resolved. I guess I can edit this file by hand each time I want to lock/unlock the pictures until it is fixed.

Cheers, Chris.

I'd log the bug and put this as an information update
