Entering stocks and updating prices

Asked by avhation

I have at last managed to upgrade from KMM 0.8 to 1.02. I have also loaded KDE4 in the belief that this was a necessary precursor. I have entered investment stock accounts, with their numbers of shares and unit prices, under 2 new institutions (to separate tax-free and taxable holdings) but I still cannot update stock prices. I cannot follow the instructions to add the stock's symbol and the security list editor is blank. The manual says I should "navigate to the investment summary view for the account in which the security is held". When I then click the left hand tab "Investments" the page is blank, although the drop down menu lists all the stock accounts. Perhaps I have entered them in the wrong place? If so, is there a better place to enter the initial holdings?
The good news is that upgrading KMM and changing to KDE has not caused data to be lost.
Regards
Henry

Go to the Investments view. In the investment view, select the investment account from the top combobox. Then select the stock you want to update, right click and edit the account.
Follow the wizard, enter the ticker symbol and on the last page you can select which service you want to use to update the price.

My guess is that you created the investment account, but not the individual stock accounts.

Thank you Ku .In "investment" view I have only blank pages so I have started to re-enter the stocks data as new investment accounts under each of the combobox (drop down menu?) entries. I have entered the symbol, stock name, accepted the default AMEX, and designated Yahoo as the on-line source. ( I may need to change these to London/UK choices in due course. ) However I have not worked out how to enter the existing numbers of shares. Your further advice would be welcome.

Henry

To enter transactions, go to the Ledger View and select the investment account.

OK, I have entered the quantity and purchase price (in 2007) but I cannot complete the transaction without saying from where the funds came. Is there a way to say that the stock-holding is an initial balance? Or should I artificially increase t e opening balance of my current (checking) account?

Henry

Instead of "Buy Shares", use "Add shares".

So obvious! Thanks again. I have a yellow warning triangle next to the status column; does this matter?

When I go to " update prices" I get something like this for each stock::

Received an invalid price for FIEU, unable to update.
Fetching URL http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=QGH&f=sl1d1...
Symbol found: QGH
Price found: 0.00 (0)

The yellow sign means you are missing some data on the transaction.

The error when retrieving means it cannot find that symbol. Check again and make sure you are using the right symbol and the right source for the stock.

OK, I'll experiment a while using various combinations of "symbol:exchange" and see if I strike lucky. If not, I'll start a new thread. Many thanks for your time and advice.
