How do I add a payee to a category permanently?

Asked by NeilEvanJensen

Every time I need to balance my checking from a downloaded qif file from my bank, I must manually assign the reoccurring payees that I have to the same category every time. Is there a way to assign payees to categories permanently such that once the transactions are imported into my account they are automatically assigned to there respective category? Thanks a lot.

In version 0.9.3 and later, you can setup the transaction matching for payees, and also assign a default category for payees.

Which version are you using?

Hei Ku, thanks for the reply. I am currently using 0.9 under Gnome. I will look for an upgrade to 0.9.3 or later. Could you explain how I would set that up in a little more detail for the new version?

In post-0.9.3 on the Payees view, when you select a payee you have a tab called "Default account". There you go.

Thank you very much. This does solve my curiosity. Now I just need to be upgraded to Karmic Koala to be able to take advantage of this release. In Jaunty the ./configure cannot find my X library path and I do not know how to find it either. So unless someone has an answer for this case closed. Thanks again.

For packages that use the X Window System, `configure' can usually
find the X include and library files automatically, but if it doesn't,
you can use the `configure' options `--x-includes=DIR' and
`--x-libraries=DIR' to specify their locations.

You can get the latest version from this PPA: https://edge.launchpad.net/~claydoh/+archive

It's a snapshot from CVS that gets updated regularly. It's very stable since we are at the moment in feature freeze prior to the release of version 1.0. And it is a lot easier than compiling.

You are awesome! Everything worked without a hitch and I now have default categories for my payees. Thanks.

I downloade a new version of Kmymoney. It's totally a different program than the version I orginally install, having future projections. How can I download the previous version?

How can I download the old version 0.9.2? I had all my accounts up and running, with forecast and home page set to the way I was working. This new version doesn't have future projections, running balances in the home page. What is the proplem with the newer version. Better still, just how can I download Version 0.9.2, I would greatly appreciate that info.

Please start a new question. Version 0.9.0 and upper have the forecast. So, it would be good to know which version you downloaded.

Thanks, I did that and got it. However, in my recent download, the schedule part doesn't have a pull-down for every other week. How would I add this?
But the current download has a provision for frequency between periods. How would I apply this to represent "every-other-week"?
Thanks

The schedule frequency has been reworked in newer versions. Now you can select the frequency in this way: happen every x (days, weeks, months, etc)

So, to select every other week, you should select "2 weeks".

That was very simple, why didn't I think of that!! Thanks.
In another instance. I wanted to backup, I used the backup dialog box to mount point /cdrom, with my CD inserted, and selected "select mount this directory" and I get the error "error mounting device" What do you think I'm doing wrong?
Thanks, Cecil

Can you write to that CD from Nautilius or other application?

Yes, I have written several CD's.

It is most likely some glitch between Gnome's way of mounting CDs and the way KDE applications work. I assume you are using Ubuntu and not Kubuntu. You will have to write your backup to your hard drive and copy it later to your CD.

I created a folder on my hard drive, KmyMoney, tried to backup there. I get the message "error mounting device". What would be the next step? Would this be a problem with Ubuntu, or what?

Make sure the "Mount the device before saving" box is not checked. If it is not, then it is probably an Ubuntu problem.

Mount the device box is checked.

Hei Ku (asoliverez) said :

Uncheck it please, because if the device is already mounted, then it will throw an error, like the one you are getting.

I did exactly that, I got an error. Then I created a folder on my desktop. Because I could not backup to a file or folder on the CD rom or my local disk. I could back up to my desktop, and it created a bin package. When I go back to the file menu to restore, there is no provision for restoring the backup on my desktop.

When my computer went down, and reinstalled Kym, do you think there is something missing when I downloaded the new Kmy as to why I can't backup and restore? I'm trying not to lose my file all over again.

The backup feature should create a file exactly like the one you have, but with the date added to the name. Are you sure that bin package is what KMyMoney saved?

It is a Gzip archive. How do I restore it?

Try to open it with KMyMoney, The KMyMoney file format is an xml file
compressed with GZip.
