If it is a normal account, just edit the account by right clicking on it on the Accounts View. From there you can edit the opening balance.
This is valid for version 0.9.x

I have a savings account and an investment account and both, when selecting to edit them do not have an opening balance field.

Version 0.8.8

You should consider upgrading to 0.9.3. There you have the option for the opening. I think, in 0.8.x you have to edit the opening balance transaction instead.

OK. I wonder how hard it is to roll your own on Kubuntu Hardy..

Maybe Intrepid packages will work.

You can install a version for Hardy from this PPA repository provided by one of our users:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~claydoh/+archive

Add his repository, then you will see a package called "KMyMoney-cvs xxxx"

Make sure to uninstall all existing KMyMoney packages before you install this one.
