Can you explain a bit more what you intend to do?
What version are you using? That's important because there have been major changes from 0.8.9 to 0.9 related to payee and category management.

using 8.8

I imported a quicken file into a new kmymoney account and I want to be able to do category changes across similar payee's where no category data is inputed. Instead of doing each line item at a time.

I'm a ubuntu newbie and doing a update to new version is beyond me if it's not in my synaptic manager!

You can have the 0.9 version installed in Hardy if you add a PPA (Personal Package Archive) that is offered by Clay, one of our contributors.

You can add the PPA to Adept, or Synaptic, whatever is your package manager of choice.

Please tell me if you have any problem installing from there.

That PPA is updated regularly from CVS, and it is really easy to install and keep updated. In that version you will find a lot of new features. The help is mostly updated, though some stuff is missing. That is something we are working on as we prepare for 1.0 release this year.
