How to enter a different currency purchase in ledger

Asked by Lacho

Hi,

I would like to know how to enter a credit card purchase in a different currency than the base currency, and have it automatically converted to my base currency.

I did a purchase in Euros on my debit card, would like to enter the purchase amount in Euros, and somehow have the currency exchange converter convert it to US Dollars. I know I can just use a calculator and convert Euros to dollars, but it kind of defeats the purpose of the currency converter; so I know I am missing something.

In MS Money, you would enter the amount, press F8, and choose what currency to use.

Create a category for the expense in the currency you want (eg. Euros in this case). Then, it will prompt for the currency conversion when you enter the transaction.

The currencies are managed by accounts and categories. So, you have to create a new category, and change the currency of that category to Euros. You can select the currency of the category when creating it.

But these are runarounds, isn't it? Is there one key or combination that pops-up the currency converter?

As I said, the currency depends on the account or category, so if you want to enter a transaction in a different currency, you must have a category or account in that currency.
That's how it works at the moment.

Can you help with this problem?
