Easy to fix. Ensure you have the extra repositories enabled:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty#How_to_add_extra_repositories
Then you can get the additional codecs you need
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty#How_to_install_multimedia_Codecs

Hope this helps!

thanks for your help, everything worked except when i tried to install the
win32 codecs I get a message that reads

Package w32codecs is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package w32codecs has no installation candidate

What have I done wrong here?

If you are running Feisty, and you have the extra repositories enabled, type sudo apt-get install w32codecs.
It works for me. If that doesn't work, Install Automatix through synaptic or through sudo apt-get install automatix2.
After Automatix is installed and you have agreed to the disclaimer, click on "codecs and plugins" and download the AUD codecs and the Multimedia Codecs packages.

Can you help with this problem?
