kmess 2.0.6.1 for maverick is available in the PPA https://launchpad.net/~kmess-packages/+archive/kmess-stable

if you open a terminal (ctrl-alt-t) and issue the command

kmess --version

what version do you see?

if it is 2.0.6.1, what do you need more?
If not, please open a terminal and issue the commands

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

then select all output (edit - select all) copy it (edit copy) and paste it as a response to this question document

Manfred Hampl,

In the terminal it shows below-

rayburke@rayburke-desktop:~$ kmess --version
Qt: 4.7.0
KDE Development Platform: 4.5.5 (KDE 4.5.5)
KMess: 2.0.6.1
rayburke@rayburke-desktop:~$

so does this mean that kmess is up to date and cant load any later versions?

According to http://kmess.org/download/ the version 2.0.6.1 is the current
stable release. (There is a version 3.0 in development, but not yet
available for easy install).

As you can see from your output you have installed that current version on
your system.

If that program does not do what you expect, then that is a different issue.

Please check yourself on http://kmess.org

There is also a forum http://kmess.org/board/

Most probably kmess.org is a better resource for your questions than this Ubuntu question page.

I can only repeat what I have already written on 2011-09-04:

Look at the page of the provider of the software http://kmess.org and the related forum http://kmess.org/board/

What you experience might be the problem that is described (and partly solved) in http://kmess.org/board/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20549#p32892

What you most probably need is the solution described in

http://kmess.org/board/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20549#p32892

Have you tried installing the modified package from lekensteyn from
http://lekensteyn.nl/files/kmess/kmess_2.0.6.1-0ubuntu1~_amd64.deb or
http://lekensteyn.nl/files/kmess/kmess_2.0.6.1-0ubuntu1~_i386.deb (depending on what architecture you have)

Or, if that does not work, have you tried applying the patch from lekensteyn and recompiling the package yourself as described there?

Maybe the version in the PPA https://launchpad.net/~bill-zt/+archive/kmess does what you need.

Manfred,

I downloaded and tried to install "
http://lekensteyn.nl/files/kmess/kmess_2.0.6.1-0ubuntu1~_i386.deb but it says
that there is a later version installed already, so I looked at
"http://lekensteyn.nl/files/kmess/fix-wlm-login.patch", but how do I install this
patch?

If you have to ask the question how to install the patch, then you should most probably try all other possibilities first.

Patching a program yourself requires some programming knowledge. For installing the patch you have to download the source package, apply the patch with the adequate command, and build a new package for yourself.

You should better try the version in bill-zt's ppa:

Open a terminal and issue the commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bill-zt/kmess
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If there are problems with that, you should copy all output of these commands and paste them into a new message of this question thread.

The error message "...EOF occurred in violation of protocol..." is really strange. A quick internet search indicates that this most probably is a bug that popped up a few days ago - but I find it only in connection with ubuntu 12.04.

So before I can give any further advice I need the information which Ubuntu version you are currently running.

Please open a terminal and issute the following commands:

uname -a
lsb_release -a

and then copy/paste all output into a new message of this question thread.

Manfred,

I did the above and the results are-

rayburke@rayburke-desktop:~$ uname -a

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10
Codename: maverick
rayburke@rayburke-desktop:~$

hope this helps and await your reply?

Ok, this confirms that you are still on maverick, and it shows that the error/bug "urlopen error [Errno 8] _ssl.c:490: EOF occurred in violation of protocol" also occurs on other versions than 12.04

Based on that, my recommendation is as follows:

1. try the commands given above (sudo apt-add-repository...) again.
If they are working now, this should install the right version automatically.
If the command fails again (which is what I expect), then do the following:

2. download and install the package from bill-zt's PPA manually:
download https://launchpad.net/~bill-zt/+archive/kmess/+files/kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb
and install it (with gdebi-gtk package installer or similar program).

... and report any errors encountered in a new message of this question thread.

Error reading https://launchpad.net/api/1.0/~bill-zt/+archive/kmess: <urlopen error [Errno 8] _ssl.c:490: EOF occurred in violation of protocol>
rayburke@rayburke-desktop:~$

but still the same error so I did not go any further, what you think I should do?

PS I am trying to download " https://launchpad.net/~bill-zt/+archive/kmess/+files/kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb"

Please upload your file to http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/ and copy/paste the link that you get there in this question document that we can see it.

There seems to be some misunderstanding (also on my side).

1. you cannot add attachments to launchpad questions
2. there is a service on http://pastebin.ubuntu.com where you can upload text files, but again no possibility to upload binary data (like e.g. a screenshot image)
3. when you upload a text file to pastebin at the end you see that the URL is something like http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/927531/ If you post that url in a question message, all persons can also access that file.

Apparently you want to provide an attachment with binary data. For that you have to use some other web hosting service to upload the file and then provide the URL that you get after uploading in a new message.
There are several free file storage providers available for doing that, e.g. imageshack.com for picture files.

The rules for the ubuntu question and answer application are that all information should be publicly available to support collaboration.
Sending information directly to my e-mail as you want to, leads to a one-to-one type of interaction which is not the aim of ubuntu.
So please either provide the information in text form in this question/answer document, or upload the binary data or picture or whatever to some internet hosting service and provide the address in a new message of this thread, that the information is accessible to all persons who want to provide support.

I do not deem it appropriate to send an attachment related to this question to my private mailbox.

If you want to provide a screen shot you should proceed as follows:

Take the screen shot and save it as a picture file on your computer (e.g. in jpg format)
go to imageshack.us
upload that file to imageshack.us
record the link address that you get (something like http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/unnamedcr.jpg/ )
post that link address in a new message of this question thread.

The screenshot shows that something went wrong with your download.

The file size should be 2.5 MiB, but your file is just 531.1 KiB.

You should delete your local copy of kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb and try to download it from https://launchpad.net/~bill-zt/+archive/kmess/+files/kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb again.

Please verify that the file size is 2,660,272 Bytes (about 2.5 MiB) and try installing again.

Most probably your e-mail system breaks the URL into pieces.
You have to look at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kmess/+question/149482 for the link address, and you should better use the message box on that page for posting and not the reply function in your e-mail.

The address for the download once more:
https://launchpad.net/~bill-zt/+archive/kmess/+build/3088200/+files/kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb

You have to be aware that some e-mail systems break long lines. This often leads to broken URLs when using them in the e-mail.

It is recommendend to take links from the launchpad answer document. In your case from the document https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kmess/+question/149482

Have you already downloaded the kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb file from bill-zt's PPA?
Is it's size about 2.5 MiB?
If yes, then try installing it with a package installer (gdebi-gtk or software-center or dpkg or whatever you prefer) and report the outcome.

As already written an April 26: Apparently something went wrong when you tried downloading that file.
Please delete the file that you have on your system with only 750 KB size, because that file is broken.
The file size has to be 2660272 Bytes.
Try downloading the file again from one of the addresses already given in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kmess/+question/149482

Manfred,

I am downloading that link as mentioned on the 26/4 which it says is 2.5mb of data, so then when it is downloaded
what will I do, as not sure on how to un-install the current one running, or I just update over it?

All the files
https://launchpad.net/~bill-zt/+archive/kmess/+files/kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb
and
https://launchpad.net/~bill-zt/+archive/kmess/+build/3088200/+files/kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb
and
http://ppa.launchpad.net/bill-zt/kmess/ubuntu/pool/main/k/kmess/kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb
are 2.5 MB (2660272 Bytes).

I do not know what's happening there on your system that you cannot get any of these files in its entirety.

Next idea:

Open a terminal and issue the command

wget -c https://launchpad.net/~bill-zt/+archive/kmess/+files/kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb

and then check the resulting file size on your system.

Manfred,

I issued that command in a terminal and the following is the result-

"rayburke@rayburke-desktop:~$ wget -c https://launchpad.net/~bill-

rayburke@rayburke-desktop:~$

but at the moment i am downloading the third link "ppa.launchpad.net/bill-zt/kmess/ubuntu/pool/main/k/kmess/kmess_2.0.6.1-4~maverick_i386.deb" and it says its 2.5 mb!

and finally it downloaded the 2.5mb file, so what do I do now?

If you have downloaded the file and if its size finally is about 2.5 MiB, then then try installing it with a package installer (gdebi-gtk or software-center or dpkg or whatever you prefer) and report the outcome.

Manfred,

I install the app with the 2.5mb and said that it installed OK and took a jpg pic
of what it said, and tied to send the result thru iamgeshack.us, but could not find the saved image,
so must have saved it wrong, and when I tried to sun it, it would connect to the internet,as
I am on dialup, so have to wait till I reconnect to the internet and the first thing I do
is run kmes, so will advise of it next time round OK
