How to launch apps with IR remote

I have managed to get my IR remote to work with VLC and XBMC, but can't quite seem to figure out how to launch either of them with remote buttons. I must be trying the wrong search terms. If anybody could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Try keytouch:
http://keytouch.sourceforge.net/

It's in the repo, the site explains it a lot, as will guides you cna find via websearches
