which files and or directories should I back up in Ubuntu Edgy

Asked by rpaco

Hi Please can you advise which files and or directories should I back up in Ubuntu Edgy.
I have had a lot of problems with the network card settings and connecting to both the Internet and my email servers; so I want to make sure I can put back all the relevant files which define and set and start the network card and all its associated settings.
Also please say which are the important files with configuration settings for all devices and whatever else you would recommend.
Basically am looking for the "equivalent effect" of restoring all the ini and system.dat and usr.dat files in windows (I used ERUNT for that which worked fine)

Many thanks
regds

Thanks for the question.

I would backup at first the home directories (/home). The configurations are stored in /etc. Some also like to backup /var since ubuntu stores there information about the system.

I hope this helps.

I would back-up home directorys, and etc. Most applications put user data into hidden folders in your home area
