"backup now" doesn't seem to mean now...

Asked by willfriedwald

Hey - I set up the stuff I wanted to be backed up, source folders & destination

then I click "backup now," but it doesn't seem to back up now - I mean, it tells me it's going to back up in one day or three days or whenever it's set for, but how I do I actually get it to backup now, as in now, when I push the button?

backup programs I'm used to on Mac will just back-up "now" when you tell them to - how can I do that?

It does run the backup when you press now but you may not see anything. It runs a job in the background and gives you a job number. If you open a terminal and type "top" without quotes you should see that job running and using a larger chunk of cpu than most other apps. Depending on how much you have to back up it may not take very long. Ultimately, you should be able to open the dir where you are sending the backups and see a folder with the backup files.

thank you so much!

Okay, will try it again today and see what happens.

I put in a blank DVDROM; so, if the thing works within a matter of hours (I set it to one day) then it stands to reason that the blank disc will no longer be completely blank.

will try it - also may look at some other back-up programs. Back-ups are a very personal psychological thing - as you know, one personally feels better when one can see a backup program working - you see a little progress bar giving you a percentage. Makes you feel that your data is SAFE!

thanks again - will report back

I'm not sure, and I don't have Ubuntu in front of me at the moment to check, but I don't know if it will back up to DVD. It might. I've just never tried nor looked. In order to back up to DVD it will have to create the files or an image and then burn it. It may do the first step but not necessarily the second - at least not automatically. I'll look into this when I get home.

If you want, there is a nice tutorial here -
