I have found and installed both ALSA mixer and GUI, neither helps with the problem. Whjat is the procedure for invoking alsa conf via Terminal?

alsaconf is not included in any ubuntu package I know of.
You can install it by downloading the latest alsa-utils package from ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/utils/ and compile the source yourself.
Note that you need asoundlib.h for compilation. You can check if you have it in /usr/include/alsa. If not you need to download and install the alsa-lib package too.

Can you help with this problem?
