Some media formats are what we call Restricted. There are patent and copyright restrictions which complicate the ability of a free operating system to distribute software that will support proprietary or non-free formats. This includes Flash, wmv, aac, wma, avi, divx, mp3, Quicktime, RealMedia, and encrypted DVDs among others.

It is very easy to enable the playing of these non-free formats following the directions on the Restricted Formats page.

There are also free formats, which can be used and implemented by anyone that do not have these restrictions. They are called Free Formats and you can get more information on them on the Free Formats page.
