Where are the files for Kontact kept?

Asked by quintacal

Hello -
I simply just want to backup all my "Kontact" information. If I back up the entire "home" folder would I be achieving this?
Thank you,
Chris

yes, the neat thing about how ubuntu security works is that programs you run as your user can only modify files in your home folder (also external hard-drives and such but typically user settings wouldn't get stored there). so all per-user settings are usually stored in /home/<username>, for example /home/gord

you also might want to check to see weather you have a .kontact directory in your home directory, if so then i would guess the settings are stored there. if not then in a .kde directory

Thanks, that has helped me understand the filing system in Ubuntu much better, However, I looked in the folder ".kde" and didn't see anything about .kontact, nor do I see a directory called .kontact in my home folder.

My concern is only to make sure that my mails and other data is backed up.

Thanks again....

kontact data is stored in:
".kde/share/apps/kmail/mail"

you might want to backup the whole kmail directory though
