Convert Files or ?

Asked by Umpquaman

Hi, I am a Ubuntu newbie. Loaded this operating system two days ago and have no problems to report. I am very impressed with this system. I have a Canon S2IS digital camera that makes a pretty darn good video. The camera makes avi files. I have read through the manual and do not see where the file type can be changed. What would be the best plan at this point? Convert the files to DV (?) to make movies or is there a better way of making and saving without converting. Thanks

Well I dont think cameras will be able to record in another format except in the one they were built to do. Is there any problem with the avi files? How big are the files? I am no video expert but I must warn you, compressing will cause you a reduction in quality. I did a quick google and dvix or xvid seem to be good ways of archiving videos.

If you plan on making a movie, keep the AVI files untill you are done, then archive them in another format.
