Kopete - ICQ Client too old (need solution without an installation)

Asked by Lagrange

Hi all!

I have the same problem everyone has at the moment. Kopete cannot connect the ICQ:

"The ICQ server thinks your client version is too old".

Now I found a nice solution at:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdenetwork/+question/63624

Unfortunately it does not work for me. I am using KDE 3, which might be the problem. Since I do not have administrator/root rights, I cannot install stuff.

Thx for your help
Lagrange

Hi,

Have you tried any of the web based icq clients such as icq2go
http://download.icq.com/download/icq2go/?icid=nav_2g

Or even something like Meebo.
http://www.meebo.com

Regards,
Brinley

Yes of course! I did use icq2go. But I have also MSN and Yahoo contacts, hence I would have to open the web based version of ICQ and Kopete. But I never tried meebo. That looks interesting - at least till the problem with Kopete is solved.

Usually the installed versions work much better than the web based ones.

but thx anyway. I will make use of it!

Okay. Here is the fix for kopete 0.12.7 (running under KDE 3.5.10, f.e. kubuntu 0804):

1) Terminate kopete (just to be sure).
2) Open the file ~/.kde/share/config/kopeterc with the editor of your choice.
3) Go to the section "[ICQVersion]"
4) Adjust the parameters to these values:

[ICQVersion]
Build=0x17AB
ClientId=0x010A
ClientString=ICQ6.5
Country=us
Lang=en
Major=0×0006
Minor=0×0000
Other=0×00007535
Point=0×0000

5) Start kopete again.
6) And you are back.

Alternative:
Use jabber -- it's _much_ better than ICQ (ICQ transmits messages in plaintext, which is ugly, ugly, ulgy!).

Cheers

A.
