kopete can't keep up with network connection

Platform: Dell Inspiron E1505
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T5600
Ethernet Controller Broadcom BCM4401-B0 with wireless
Linux Kernel: 2.6.20-16-generic
Kubuntu-Desktop: 1.32ubuntu1
KDE: 3.5.7
Kopete: 1.12.5

I was at the laudromat which has a wireless connection. I connected with no problem.

Then I came home, where I have a wired connection, but kopete will not connect to the wired network no matter what I do!

I shutdown kopete, then knetstats, then knetworkmanager.
Then I started up Kopete and was prompted for the KDE Wallet password...

now I'm connected!
