Go to "System->Preferences->Sound". Use the "Test" button to verify your sound configuration works (hardware is recognized). Click on the "Sounds" button to configure sounds for the desktop events. (Many of them are very quiet.)
Most of the games included in any version of Linux don't seem to have any sound. It's been brought up before, but so far they play without. The only one built FOR linux that I have noticed real nice sound is "Battle for Wesnoth"; perhaps someone else knows of a way to ASSIGN sounds for some games (Fedora Core 2 allowed for sounds to be assigned to some of it's games, esp. the minefield, but I haven't really looked for it here.)

Can you help with this problem?
