Thanks for the question.

When you say you installed the gnome packages, I gather you mean the package gnome or gnome-desktop-environment and their depend packages.

On you login screen (if you use kdm as is the kubuntu default) should be an options button which you can choose the session. If you choose Gnome there, you will have the gnome desktop.

I hope this helps

I have installed all the gnome packages which are necessary as I think.
On the login screen I can't find a gnome program for opening.
In SuSE you have gnome-session, but what do we have in Ubuntu for it?

On the left hand side from the field in which you enter the account name and the password is an icon symbolising a menu. Click on this and then choose session type, and then Gnome.

I hope this helps.

No, I am sorry, I can find KDE, Default, but not Gnome. What Gnome
package is in Ubuntu necessary. I believe it is missing in my
configuration.

Ok.. if I looked it up right, ubuntu-desktop is the base package that forces all the necessary packages for gnome desktop, as kubuntu-desktop is for the KDE desktop.

You are right, Ralph, but I am afraid it is not the solution.

You could install the meta-package ubuntu-desktop, or maybe gnome-core

The installation of gnome-core was the solution of the problem. Many thanks
