Also note that Firefox and Konqueror browsers have Java disabled by default and you need to activate it from preferences. Also in Konqueror you have the option to activate Java from the "Tools" -> "HTML Settings" submenu.

Follow the official instructions to install Java. Especially notice the section "Selecting the default Java version":-

THANKS FOR THE TIPS...I'LL TRY THESE.......THE COMMAND PROPOSED BY FELIX......IS THIS A COMMAND WHICH INCLUDES THE DIRECT DOWNLOADING FROM INTERNET OR IS THS THE INSTALLATIONCOMMAND OF THE JRE6 FILE ALREADY DOWNLOADED IN A DIRECTORY ON YOUR COMPUTER?

THANKS!

If the file is already downloaded and installed, the package manager or apt-get will notice that and not install it again.

Also it is important to execute

  sudo update-alternatives --config java

and select java 6 there and to add the line

 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/

on top of the file /etc/jvm

I hope this helps
