You may not have screensaver packages installed. Try installing kubuntu-dekstop, it will pull in all the needed packages.
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #3 |
i did a reinstall.. with no effect
actually - the screensaver's are running fine - just no menu !?!
Try to set an English locale for KDE and post the screenshot
Please set an Enlgish locale and post a screenshot with the configuration dialog. Does it show "Loading..." for a brief time in the white area?
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #6 |
sry - i have two locals installed en and ge and i don't dare to change the installation .. but anyway .. there's no config dialogue.. no loading no anything .. and the buttons for preferences and testing are not selectable in the pic as you see..
looks strange for me, althouge i had big probs with glx on the way to get beryl running, possibly i purged somthing down the path? so i was in good hope with your first proposal..
You can change the Language for dialogs and menus in System Settings->Regional and Language-
Once in there click Add Language and select US English (if it is not in the language list), then select it in the language list and click Move Up to move the US English to the top of the list. Logout and login again to see the changes to languages.
If US english is not installed install the relevant package with the command "apt-get install language-
Then make a screenshot and post it here.
Please provide the output of "dpkg -l kubuntu-desktop" command.
Are you runnung the latest feisty (you said you did a reinstall)?

yes i do -.. i did a manual dist-upgrade to feisty-herd4 from an actual edgy - which was afresh install of the last "kubuntu-6-10 live dvd for i386"
and.. yes the ss starts automatically after 4mins in random mode running base and some glx screensavers.
And I'm quite sure that the setup and selection of ss's still was possible after the upgrade - but not after i got glx running.
perhaps i mixed aiglx somehow? do they exclude each other by install?
Version 1.32-ubuntu1 indicates that you are running Kubuntu 7.04 feisty. Are all updates installed?
When I uninstall kscrensaver package I see no entires for screensavers, but two: Blank Screen and Random, this seems to be close to your issue, so the solution is to reinstall kscreensaver package.
METHOD 1
Try to reinstall it first with:
apt-get install --reinstall kscreensaver
Log out/login and see if screensavers appear.
METHOD 2
1) Purge kscreensaver package:
apt-get remove --purge kscreensaver
this may remove some packages which depend on kscreensaver, note them and install them later.
2) And then install it again:
apt-get install kscreensaver
And removed packages
apt-get install <package1> <package2> ...
Logout/login and see if screensavers appear.

an up-to-date feisty - yes
method 1 did not work
method 2 the same. it was even the same when completly uninstalled.
again a screenshot after trying method 2: http://
the screensaver is still running in random mode. the purging seemed to run well but the install process was done in half the time.
btw: beryl desktop manager crashed when changing the system language.. now it's running again.
Please provide the contents of xorg.conf, the model and maker of you video card and all the relavant information how beryl/xgl are configured.
Please post the output of
ls -la /usr/lib/
Also, try to reinstall the kcontrol package, it actually contains the applet which configures screensavers.
Try both methods, as with kcontrol package.

ls kcm_...: http://
.beryl-managerrc: http://
running a compaq nx9030 laptop..
gfx: intel 85x
driver: i810 (switches automatically to this)
there was an updated i810 driver which made beryl working on a 85x..
i think hw-renderer is running sh since this update (or perhaps gets simulated)- though the screensaver-prob is older
beryl is configured with xgl only - i can use all features but rain and hw-blur due there's still a hw-renderer problem
going to try the 3. proposal now.. reinstall kcontrol.. will post if something changed my situation.
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #15 |
re-installing kcontrol has no effect
purging it want's to purge the following:
kcontrol
kde-core
kde-systemsettings
kdebase
kmplayer-
konq-plugins
konqueror
kubuntu-desktop
kubuntu-
you're sure i have to do this?
Purge the kcontrol and dependencies, and then reinstall all the packages, no harm would be done. Do not login/logout though, purge, then immediately install.
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #17 |
ok - no effect.
before i enabled the pre-released updates source - so i'm really up-to-date afaik
Please try to view screensaver list in plain X, without beryl/xgl, does this bug show up?
Also try to launch kcontrol (and systemsettings, too) from konsole command prompt, go to screensaver configuration applet and see if there are any output in konsole. If there are any, please post it here.
As a last resort - try Live CD of feisty - is the bug there?
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #20 |
screensavers: http://
starting kcontrol in the console is the same, no list and no button accessible
starting kubuntu in plain kdm has the same bug - how to switch off xgl?
tried live-dvd kubuntu 6.10 where the list poped up after a loading-message for a short time
a live-cd ubuntu 7.04 had also accessible screensver menu's
i don't have to many building sites, not as on mandriva or red-hat, the i810 driver still leaves 3-4 hw-components unasigned - i don't care.. it works better than in xp and the vegastrike-engine works fine. Unfo i damaged this but my luck i left the setup in an aceptable state.. so many thanks anyway.
or perhaps - just in case i happen to get a nice screensaver - is there a config-file for this ?
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #21 |
ahm.. i'm not sure, the output seems to show none of my active screensavers from kubuntu. I couln't find a list or directory on my fs
The output in konsole when running systemsettings or kcontrol may show you what files or directories have problems. You can uase "dpkg -S <file_or_
Also, $HOME/.
You can configure which screensaver is used in $HOME/.
Also try to reinstall kdebase-bin, rss-glx, kscreensaver packages they all contain screensavers.
The list of sreensavers is taken from /usr/share/
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #25 |
systemsettings produces output like: adding Screen Saver /usr/share/
when i look there, it includes: http://
the screensavers directory is readable with data in it
i did not have rss-glx installed yet - reinstalling kdebase had no effect
i can't open $HOME/.
.xsession-errors - produces:
X Error: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) 8
Major opcode: 155
Minor opcode: 6
Resource id: 0x4d
X Error: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) 8
Major opcode: 155
Minor opcode: 6
Resource id: 0x4d
X Error: BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter) 4
Major opcode: 54
Minor opcode: 0
Resource id: 0x1807d29
tryed it also with a new Kernel but 2.6.21.1 seems to be broken, gonna try later again
NOW - tried to reinstall and - during this and right afterwards - i had the xsession-errors list open: here's the output http://
The most likely cause is the problem with $HOME/.
Does it exist? Is it readable/writable by your user? Is $HOME/.
You can use "chmod" shell command to alter permissions on files and directories.
If not just try to delete (make a backup!) $HOME/.
Remember to expand $HOME variable into something like "/home/myuser" when using GUI programs. In shell (konsole) you can use it as is, expansion will be done by shell.
As a last resort, create a new user account and try to see the list of screensavers with it.
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #27 |
the file and directorys exist and have the correct right values
deletion of the kdesktoprc did not recreate it
then.. i created a testuser and.. it works - there. - so may i cp files from there?
kdesktoprc is created (or overwritten) only when you change some settings and click OK or Apply.
When kdesktoprc is deleted from the user account you have problems in, does the screensaver list show up?
You can try to copy kdesktoprc from another user account, no harm will be done. However if it is not created atomatically, then the problem lies deeper somewhere else.
Launch the "strace kcmshell screensaver 2> strace_output" from the shell, alter the timeout setting for launching screensaver and click OK.
Then post the strace_output to pastebin. Oh, it will be big.
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #30 |
i replaced kdesktoprc:same problem - no screensaver list is loading and nothing but the "Start Automatically"
i can't click any OK or Apply in the screensavers menu because they're not visible/selectable
then i launched the "strace kcmshell screensaver 2> strace_output" which started the Configuration-
-> strace_output is is too big for Pastebin.. do you know another place ? shall i e-mail it to you directly?
Try rapidshare.com
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #32 |
here you are :-) http://
Some strange things are happeing. Screensaver applet probes for "/usr/share/
Use
grep -Rli System-2 ~/.kde 2>/dev/null
to list the files where System-2 is found and correct that.
If nothing found, try
grep -Rli System-2 ~/ 2>/dev/null
if that does not help, then that it is a bug and should be reported.
Please provide the list of files you corrected to fix this issue.
And the last question would be how "System-2" appeared in configuration files.
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #34 |
ok - meanwhile i did a dpkg-reconfigure -a which terminated @shadowpwd.. ok-prbly a user-fault ;)
then furthermore i upgraded to kde-3.5.7 (which resulted in a successfull restart of X after the 3. Reboot [which made big concerns for me])
of course with no result in this panel thing and so now i looked for:
privat@
privat@
/home/privat/
*
*the cursor still here, black not blinking (1h now.. will let it run a bit longer..)
i'm not going to change the entries now - i'm unsure about nothing is in the kde folder and about the e-mail client..
i wonder how this came.. virus? hack?
i have some init-probs for aiglx but all seems to be minor.. ah and i don't get initng running..
i really think - first time i remarked this was after the dist-upgrade and quit soon afterwards i started to look for info.
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #35 |
a long run for 4-1/2 h did only bring up the bash history additionally, and the 1.st was you launchpad-e-mail, i won't delete this one..
i searched in the aptitue virtual and proposed task packages for lost stuff, i only found libdebconfclient0
no result.. a bug?
This seems to be a bug which cannot be easily reproduced.
After upgrading to KDE 3.5.7 do you still have a screensaver list in another user account? Try to use the one you created when you have been on KDE 3.5.6 and try to create one more, see whether KDE 3.5.7 changed things for new accounts.
Also, provide the output of
dpkg -L kcontrol | xargs grep -li System-2
Also provide the output of
dpkg -S System-2
Also, install apt-show-versions and provide the output of
apt-show-versions | grep -v feisty
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #39 |
3.5.6 and 3.5.7 accounts show the same sane Screensaver: the OpenGL SS's work fine but the newly installed GL SS's don't work (rss-glx you mentioned.. i've to look another time..)

just an idea for a dirty trick..
/usr/share/applnk$ sudo cp -sr System System-2
don't work, i'll have to do a link for each SS ..
is there a way to link a directory tree? mount?..
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #43 |
i did 3 symlinks also to the random-one..
first they're getting loaded in the panel
then they were selectable but not the panel-menu
doubleclicking opend the ss's setup and released the Setup/Test Buttons to be clickable again
fine
the random one still works with the ss's in the first directory.. i will remove these links again soon..
The following should work for you.
cd /usr/share/applnk
rm -rf System-2
ln -sf System System-2
Also search in /etc:
sudo grep -liR System-2 /etc
Opps, add sudo to the first commnads:
cd /usr/share/applnk
sudo rm -rf System-2
sudo ln -sf System System-2
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #46 |
the search didn'tbring up anything
the link works - many thanks to you
still i'm wondering how it came..
for my rss-glx problem.. could you provide me your ~/.xscreensaver content? my file's completly empty
~/.xscreensaver does not exists.
Please try to select KDE from "Session Type" menu when logging in. See if screensaver list appears, to rule out any Xgl/beryl dependency.
If it does not appear, please report a bug against kdebase (source) and kcontrol(binary) package. If the list appears, please report the bug against Ubuntu in general, the devs should figure what package the bug belongs to.
Link this answer request to the bug.
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #48 |
ok anyway - it's another issue
the ss's with the link now do work. beryl - kubuntu it's the same behaviour
i don't want to bother anyone but i'll report it as a general..
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #49 |
Thanks Dennis P. Nikolaenko, that solved my question.
| Tscheesy (tscheesy) said : | #50 |
i can't find another entry then base - can't change it
| Ilpo Kantonen (ilpo) said : | #51 |
I had and have same problem too. The screensaver list doesn't appear in kcontrol. I think that it is maybe a bad side effect using buggy kthememanager. Old version of that program maybe changes something deeply in KDE system. After using kthememanager I upgraded KDE without changing home-directory. The screensaver list didn't appear in new version of the KDE when I logged in to my own account. But if I log in to some other user, screensaver list works ok!
So, you can look for what the kthememanager does to KDE and then you can find the place where the "bug" lies.
