Cannot uptade. Error causes Gnome and other utilities to crash

Asked by yodar

ERROR
[E: Type 'wget' is not known on line 37 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.]

cannot edit out line 37 because it is write only. Do not know how to log on root as system administrator (Ubuntu 6.10) to gain write authority in system files to eliminate 'WGET' defect
