initiating application for ipod

I am trying to initiate ipod and have plugged into computer. An icon appears, but I don't know how to get linux to connect so I can download.

You can access media connected to your computer through the /media folder, generally. As for iPods, you can use Amarok or Rhythmbox to access your musics. Read their respective manuals for more specific information.
