Cannot install firefox

Asked by saites

(I am a n00b) I cannot install firefox. I started by trying to find firefox (which I thought was included). I could not, so I used Adept to find it. I uninstalled it with the intention of reinstalling it; however, I could not find it in the list after that. I then downloaded the files straight from Mozilla and followed their install instructions. Unfortunately, it too failed (libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory). I then tried to install libstdc from Adept (which worked, supposedly) but it still doesn't work/show up in Adept. After that, I tried sudo apt-get install firefox:

Package firefox is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package firefox has no installation candidate

I really don't know what to do now. I tried restarting and doing everything again, but no luck.

What version of Ubuntu are you using? Firefox is installed by default in Ubuntu.
Try to press Alt+F2 and enter:
firefox

If you're using Kubuntu press Alt+F2 and enter:
konqueror

Hello Saites...

You need to modify your sources.list file

For Kubuntu type:
kdesudo kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list
Exactly as you see it there, then press enter/return. Enter your password when prompted and edit the file in the editor as advised above. You should then save and quit the editor.
The program which reads /etc/apt/sources.list should work again.

For ubuntu 7.10 please paste the below:

#deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 7.10 _Gutsy Gibbon_ - Release i386 (20071016)]/ gutsy main restricted
# See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to

Save the source list

Run the update manager

gksu "update-manager -c"

Or sudo apt-get update

For sources.list of other versions please refer:

I'm new to this, as I said before, so I'll take a stab at what that did for me:

Kubuntu was set to get stuff it needed from my install CD. By editing that file, I told it where to find packages online. Thus, it was able to locate Firefox (and the 188 package updates).

Is this basically correct? Thank you again for your help.
