1) yes it's stable (but not perfected - no OS is). To see what version you have, open a terminal (apps-accessories) and type

cat /etc/*release

Output looks like

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10"

2) two ways. When you have updates to run, you should see the option to upgrade to the new version. You can also open the update manager under system-admin. If you don't get the option you may already have gutsy. However, you can't use this to "skip" a version (eg. from 6.10 to 7.10). Second option is to just install the new version from scratch.

3) firefox 2.0 is installed by default and upgraded when updates make it into the repositories. If you have, or when you get, Gutsy you should have 2.0.0.11 - latest stable release in Ubuntu.

To: Jim Hutchinson......TU 4 ur msg.

1) Worked Great!...I have feisty, Ubuntu 7.04...

2)

a) I don't have an "Update mgr" in system admin.
       I have session mgr & service mgr.

b) I have Adept as a package mgr.
    On updates Adept usually (not always) crashes with msg:

    "There was an err committing changes. Possibly there was a prob d/l some pkgs or the commit would break pkgs".

Is this a prob w/ Adept or have another suggestion?

3) Currently, my only way to get Firefox 2.0 (required for my Gmail to load) is thru the Location menu. But I now have it, Thanks for that also!

Maybe 7.04 didn't have the update manager on the menus or maybe because you have kubuntu. I don't know kubuntu very well. Adept should offer you the option to upgrade to the newest release, but I don't know about Adept so that's a guess.

I think you can still load Synaptic in kubuntu so open that (system - admin) and choose edit-fix broken and see if that gets rid of the error. You should be able to install firefox from Synaptic too. I forgot that it's not installed on kubuntu.

Jim Hutchinson:

Thank you for your help.

I received a "Version Up" button, & got to Kubuntu 7.10 gutsy.

This solved it.
