what problems are you having exactly? annother good program for handling archives such as .gz is file-roller although gnome specific it will work fine under kde. you can install it from a terminal with "sudo apt-get install file-roller"

To open a terminal: Alt+<F2>. Type xterm then enter.

Type this on the terminal then type enter. PS: you need a internet connection to install this.
$sudo apt-get install file-roller
