no sound and not able to get into rooms with gaim

no sound has ever been able to come out of gaim . i do here sound but that program doesnt play any. is there a way to get pidgin?

You can install Pidgin through Add/Remove, or Adept or Synaptic Package Managers.

Or the fastest option is to type in a terminal: "sudo apt-get install pidgin" (without quotes). :)

Can't help with sound or rooms in gaim, sorry.

Ah yes, sorry, no pidgin in feisty. There will be one when gutsy comes out (18th October).

If you want it now you have some choices:
- wait for gutsy (recommended)
- download source from pidgin homepage (http://www.pidgin.im/) and we'll compile it
- upgrade to gutsy now (it's beta, some problems anticipated)
- add gutsy repositories to your software sources and install pidgin then (somewhat advanced option)
