unknown host, notification when I try to retreive e-mails from b.t. untill I log on using x.p, then it works on kubuntu

I can not get on-line to sites or to retrieve my e-mails from b.t. till I have done this with x.p. I get the notification for e-mails of Unknown host, Once I have used windows x.p, to get my mails Kubuntu will work fine for that session.

I have found that if I leave the modem switched on ( it is an always on connection ) then it's fine, but if the modem is switched of or there is a power cut ,then the p.c. is restarted I get the notification " Unknown host "

Instead of switching the p.c. and peripherals on all at once, I have to switch on the p.c. and then when it is booted
 switch on the modem, the connection is then made and monitored by the p.c. and it works fine,
