KDE on Ubuntu basis

Asked by Piet Beukes

Hi, I have loaded Ubuntu on my one PC (using Kubuntu on another). I saw that it is possible to put the KDE desktop on the Ubuntu base. what do I have to do the get this result? when I go to start, there is the option of OPTION. However, on my system, it does not give me currently the option of switching to KDE.

Hello Rusty,

The easiest way to add, delete, upgrade, etc software on your *Ubuntu (or any Debian derived) system is to use one of the package managers provided. I happen to prefer the character-mode "aptitude" (requires a terminal but not a gui) others like the gui Synaptic.

In either case, you could probably simply select "kde" and get it all or select individual pieces that interest you and automatically get the necessary infrastructure.

Hope this helps,
== Buz :)

Hi Buz,
thanx for answering - still a question. By downloading KDE, will it automatically be loaded into the current system? how will I access it? will it be by logging out and them choosing Options at start menu? I ask because I have a small broadband account and want to know what the result will be before I download and then cannot use it. Rusty

Try this: (type in a terminal)

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

It should install Kubuntu Desktop over your Ubuntu Installation. After the install is finished, it should automatically log in to KDE... if not; logout and click on 'Options' on the Login Screen and choose KDE as your preferred desktop environment. If you, at some point later, choose to go back to GNOME you should specify that by clicking on 'Options' on the Login Screen.
