KDM Critical Error at Login Cannot Exit to Console

Asked by Tony Chiaffredo

I have a Kubuntu desktop that is throwing a Critical Error dialog when I attempt to login. I cannot Ctrl-Alt-F{2-6} to Console, I cannot use a different DM (Ubuntu,Failsafe,...). SSH is not enabled. Xrdp is also failing login. I'm effectively locked out of my desktop, and I have no idea why.

I have used a Kubuntu 14.10 USB image to mount and chroot in, but I cannot find any kdm logs in /var/log, and I do not see any glaring messages in syslog, or dmesg. The server appears to be up ok, but cron jobs are also failing due to login/account challenges.

I'm just not sure which direction to go next.

I would re-install over the top of the instance if I was assured that my home dirs would be preserved. The install wizard is not offering up a repair option, but the partion page does display the partitions correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you login as guest?

Do your partitions have free space?

No, I wasn't able to log in using any account. I figured out how to specify partition targets in a re-install. So I've gone that route. It was not clear to me in the install dialog that I could change the targets and preserve my home partition.
