Display problems with Compaq Evo N1000c laptop

Asked by Rayek

My laptop is a Compaq Evo N1000c and has an ATI Radeon 7500 video card. Kubuntu seems to be recognizing the card just fine. My display; however, is having serious issues. It should be able to support a 1024x768 resolution. Currently, it shows up in the Display Settings as a Generic Plug 'n Play monitor with a max resolution of 800x600. If I try and change it to anything else, I get a screen full of hash marks and an X for a mouse cursor. The only way I can get out is to do a hard shutdown.

Thanks for your question, to resolve your problem you ca try to enable the restict ati module in ubuntu 7.04, to do it, open a shell and do this:

$: gksu -D /usr/share/applications/restricted-manager.desktop /usr/bin/restricted-manager

this open a restict-manager guim enable ATI driver and than restart. After you are able to modify your resolution.

Thanks

I was overthinking the issue. I reconfigured the display setting to Flat Panel 1024x768, ignored the error message about how my configuration hadn't been tested, logged out, restarted X and everything started working.

My Evo is running the KDE desktop. I went into the display settings manager and set the video driver to the generic ATI (Kubuntu had already figured this out). I then set the display to type to Flat Panel 1024x768. I hit Apply and ignored the error about my video/monitor combo being untested. I logged out, restarted X, logged back in and was able to set my screen to the correct resolution. Whatever you do, don't hit the Test button in the display manager to see if the video/monitor combo works. Doing that is what hung me up initially.
