How do I install rar compression support for karchiver?
I'm trying to unsplit a rar file, but whenever I try to open it an error comes up saying "Compressor not available". I opened up the plugins window and see that I don't have rar compression support, click on the download link and I'm taken to the rarlab website. What do I do now?
I went to the downloads page and downloaded 'RAR 3.80 for Linux' but have no idea what to do with it, or even if it's what I needed to download.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Please open a Terminal and enter the following commands:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install unrar
Once you have installed this package your archive-manager supports rar packages

Mark

Hi,
I entered the commands above as requested, and terminal seems to have updated successfully with no errors, but opening up the rar file with karchiver still returns the same error, and opening up the rar file with ark opens the file fine, but only extracts one part of the 92 part archive.
Any ideas? Do I need to provide the output from the Terminal?
Thanks in advance,
Lachlan

Hi,
Please send us the first 10 filenames of the 92 part archive. Also send the shell command you are using to try to extract the .rar file. Also send the error message that you get.
Regards,
Mark

Hi,
I'm not trying to use a shell command - as mentioned in the title/description I'm trying to open the multipart rar archive using karchive... I'm a (K)Ubuntu rookie so at this point I'm just relying on programs from Adept.
Karchive says that I don't have rar compression support, which is one of the plugins in the configuration window. It shows that it's not installed but provides a link which takes me to the RARlab website. I presume there is a package that I need to download and install, but I don't know which package I need to download nor how to install it.
As requested, the first 10 filenames are:
rev-x264-
rev-x264-
rev-x264-
rev-x264-
rev-x264-
rev-x264-
rev-x264-
rev-x264-
rev-x264-
rev-x264-
It continues up to .r92, followed by rev-x264-
Thanks in advance,
Lachlan

perhaps you have to install rar, not unrar. unrar is a decompressor only.

Hi,
I know it's far from ideal and not exactly what you asked for, but - as a workaround - could you please open a Terminal and navigate to the subdirectory containing the .rar archive file?
Then run the following command to try to extract the .rar contents:
unrar x rev-x264-
Please post the output of this command on this thread.
Regards,
Mark

Well, that seems to have fixed it - it's unrarred the file just fine. Thanks for your help - although it wasn't quite was I was looking for, at least I now know how to unrar files via command line, which I didn't before. Certainly not as convenient as having a GUI, but it serves its purpose well enough. If you have any other ideas concerning Karchive or any other apps which would work with split RAR files, please let me know.
Here is the output of the command as requested:
UNRAR 3.80 beta 2 freeware Copyright (c) 1993-2008 Alexander Roshal
