can't bind

Asked by chasw

I am running Feisty and have loaded Kaffeine successfully with Freecom DVB USB TV stick. It plays Digital TV from the Freecom DVB stick ok but every time I start Kaffeine, I get the error message "Can't bind info socket". What does it mean? How do I fix it?
Thank you for help

Try this:

/etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules add:
Code:
# dvb devices KERNEL="dvb*", PROGRAM="/etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh %k", NAME="%c", GROUP="video", MODE="0660"

Then make the script:
/etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh
and set it executable chmod +x /etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh
Code:
#!/bin/sh /bin/echo $1 | /bin/sed -e 's,dvb\([0-9]\)\.\([^0-9]*\)\([0-9]\),dvb/adapter\1/\2\3,' #end of script

Thank you for your help.
There was no file named udev.rules in that location but I created one with the code in it as you defined

#!/bin/sh /bin/echo $1 | /bin/sed -e 's,dvb\([0-9]\)\.\([^0-9]*\)\([0-9]\),dvb/adapter\1/\2\3,' #end of script

Then made the script and as root tried to run it, but with the following error message

bin/sh: Can't open /bin/echo $1 | /bin/sed -e 's,dvb\([0-9]\)\.\([^0-9]*\)\([0-9]\),dvb/adapter\1/\2\3,' #end of script

I also tried taking out space between -e and 's but that made no difference
Having logged off and on again, and starting Kaffeine, I got the same error message as before.

So, to verify, you made the script by using an editor to make a file called dvh.sh in /etc/udev/scripts/ and but the script inside it, then chmod +x it?
Thanks for verifying just judging by the error it looks amiss.

Yes. I used pico as sudo.
Here is the ls-all of both files.

XX:/etc/udev/rules.d$ ls -l udev.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 99 2007-04-15 20:57 udev.rules

XX:/etc/udev/rules.d$ ls -l //etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 112 2007-04-15 23:18 //etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh

And here is the listing of the contents of both files.
XX:/etc/udev/rules.d$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules
#dvb devices Kernel="dvb*",PROGRAM="etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh%k",NAME="%c",GROUP="video",MODE="0660"

XX:/etc/udev/rules.d$ cat /etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh
#!/bin/sh /bin/echo $1 | /bin/sed -e
's,dvb\([0-9]\)\.\([^0-9]*\)\([0-9]\),dvb/adapter\1/\2\3,' #end of
script

Im out of solutions at the moment, You might want to try #ubuntu or #ubuntu+1 (feisty support) on irc.freenode.net
Thanks, Dave

Not sure if this helps anyone.

This "can't bind" error started for me very recently but appeared not to stop anything I wanted to do (DVB,DVD,video files) on Kaffeine.

I then noticed a windowlet on the start window "7. DVB Client" which had not been there before. I don't know what DVB Client does. The manual is most unhelpful on this. I went to setting>DVB Client and un-checked "enable DVB client. The error message no longer appears when I start kaffeine and I can still do everything I want to do.

If you want DVB Client enabled then you have to provide suitable ports in the setting dialogue. I don't know how to do this, but as I said I don't seem to need it.

Can you help with this problem?
