To rip dvds you must have a transcoder that removes protection form the disk...
I don't know whether k3b does it or not, even though I guess not.

I have successfully made backups of my dvds by launching dvdshrink (windows program) over wine (windows "emulator" for linux).

You can install wine by adding this repository in synaptic:
deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt edgy main

Thanks for the help...

I have installed libdvdread (great library) acidRip and Thoggen both great programs which do the trick. Acidrip will rip and convert a 1:30H DVD in 50 mins on a low end PC using lavc (not really sure what this codec is). Would be good to know how to do it in K3B though, Ow well I'll keep looking

Thanks
John

If you want to rip and shrink a DVD, try k9copy: sudo apt-get install k9copy

It won't work on some of the newer copy protected DVDs, however.
