I don't know Jack

I have tried several guitar applications such as Guitarix and Rakarrack. Both look great but I get no sound when I connect my guitar to my laptop. I did find a post in another forum that said they corrected it by changing the settings in JACK, but did not give details. I have no idea how to connect my guitar other than through a mini jack to the microphone input and the guitar with a 1/4" jack as normal. Can someone PLEASE help me?!! I would love to be able to just use my laptop in my classroom connecting to a set of powered speakers instead of tons of stomp boxes and amplifiers.

you'll need a pre-amp to change the guitar signal to sound which you can then connect to the audio in.
