Istanbul and gtk-recordMyDesktop don't playback sound when I record a video.

Asked by dnmcelroy

I am trying to use a video capture application (Like Freecorder on Windows) to capture lessons from a class I am taking. I tried the Istanbul and gtk-recordMyDesktop applications, but they don't record and playback the sound. Maybe I am doing something wrong.
If anyone knows of another application that will capture videos with sound, please let me know.

Have you verified your mic is working?
Can you use sound recorder to record from your mic?
Is the mic unmuted both in the volume control/mixer AND the mic itself?

Let us know.

I didn't verify the mic was working because I wasn't recording sounds through the mic. I was recording a lesson from the Internet. Regardless, I checked the settings and found sounds set for "barking" (something I set during setup, that never seemed to work ) so, I reset that to the Ubuntu default sounds. That doesn't produce sounds either. I will reboot to see if that made any changes.
BTW, I routinely use this system to listen to the radio and the radio stream sounds fine.

I don't think the video capture tools record system audio, normally i would either overlay audio from another source or a mic.

Can you help with this problem?
