Is this for one package or all packages your try to install or remove?

Please let us know which package or packages you are trying to install or remove. Generally this is a dependency error given for *A* package.

In a terminal type:

sudo apt-get update

And then try to proceed with what you were doing before. What version of Ubuntu are you running? And again, is this for *everything* you try to install/remove or just one thing? When did it start?

If you are running Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04) then this is a known bug if this is just for irda-utils. I have linked the bug to this question (Bug #340718).

If this is indeed the case, and not ALL packages as in your question, then I encourage you to go to the bug and make a comment about your situation.

Also, click on the change link in the bug. It will look like:
"This bug doesn't affect me (CHANGE)"...

Can you help with this problem?
