Kubuntu 17.04 version not working on HP Pavilion DV6 lap-top 9 yrs old/ How to fix?

Asked by steve77

HP Pavilion Entertainment PC us DV6. Should I uninstall the package and reinstall it or maybe patch it. I suspect missing dependences due to the computers age. When I get it fixed do I need to lock some things so future upgrades don't break it again? How do I lock stuff?

Driver manager doesn't list this driver but I think some things are working, but other things are not working. Games that worked before now say things like 'could not find a glx render' or something like that. A search shows the driver in my system but it looks like there are missing files so the kernel doesn't see it correctly. That's probably why there is no listing in Driver manager. There is no Vesa driver in Driver Manager either! I think it may be running at least some of it because I still get a high resolution display. I should be getting GLX 3 or so but just 2.1 right now, so something is broken.

You can prevent packages being updated with apt-pinning

I suggest you wipe the install off and do a clean install of Xenial. Xenial is LTS and supported til April 2021. Long after Zesty is EOL, even Arty

Downloading Kubuntu 16.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso now. I was afraid I'd have to do something like that, as I really like plasma 5.1. I will be happy when I can afford a new laptop and can get back to that beautiful desktop. I think it might be the end of gnome as it can do everything gnome can do and lots more! Look this up on youtube.com: Why Ubuntu 18.04 Should Use KDE Plasma Instead of GNOME and it's all true! I tried all that stuff and yes it all works as he says.

Can you help with this problem?
