issue with intel-microcode 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2: Cannot boot in normal mode anymore

Asked by Jérôme Lovy

SInce today (Nov 15, 2020) I cannot boot in normal mode any more: boot process stalls, without any drive activity shown by LED, with empty black screen. Yesterday night, I remember having launched Ubuntu update-manager but don't remember which packages have been updated then.

Since I can boot in "recovery mode", I suppose the issue is with some graphical driver configuration update. My laptop is equipped with an Nvidia graphical adapter.

Therefore I followed https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicsTroubleshootingProcedure and hereunder is the output of Step 2. Thanks in advance for your help!

I just solved my problem by removing the "quiet" command in the linux boot command, either during the boot process or within "/etc/default/grub".

Now I'm able to boot in normal mode again.

I'm glad with this workaround but I suppose a bug has been recently introduced that makes "quiet" crash my boot.

Hmm,

When switching my laptop on this morning, my issue was unfortunately back.

Actually, before apparently solving my problem, I had been also trying to downgrade two following packages (that had been upgraded just before my problem started to show): linux-firmware and intel-microcode:amd64.

Yesterday, I had downgraded these 2 packages, but since it didn't seem to change anything, I had upgraded both packages again.

Today, when the problem went back, I found out that the apparent workaround (removing the "quiet" option from the linux boot command line) that I had found yesterday didn't work any more.

Therefore, I tried downgrading intel-microcode again:
$ sudo apt install intel-microcode:amd64=3.20191115.1ubuntu3
=> Downgrade: intel-microcode:amd64 (3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2, 3.20191115.1ubuntu3)

An important thing to note is that the installation process for intel-microcode is not complete before the next reboot:
"intel-microcode: microcode will be updated at next boot"

Then at some point, downgrading intel-microcode seemed to solve the issue.

To be sure, I tried to upgrade intel-microcode back to 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2:
$ sudo apt install intel-microcode:amd64=3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2
=> Upgrade: intel-microcode:amd64 (3.20191115.1ubuntu3, 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2)

I would expect this last move to bring back the issue and thus isolate the problematic package upgrade.
However, as of now, I have been able to boot successfully in normal mode again.
Maybe an additional factor is to really switch the computer off before starting the boot process again...

Anyway, I'm now back to intel-microcode 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2 and will watch if some upcoming boot process halts...

After further tests, I confirm that my issue of "normal boot process hanging" is caused by version 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2 of package intel-microcode.

Downgrading intel-microcode to 3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2 suppresses the issue.
(BTW, it is unfortunately impossible to do so with:
  sudo apt install intel-microcode:amd64=3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2
instead, one must first download http://launchpadlibrarian.net/483718725/intel-microcode_3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2_amd64.deb found on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/focal/amd64/intel-microcode/3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2 then issue:
  sudo apt install .//intel-microcode_3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2_amd64.deb
)

A misleading factor is that, even when keeping version 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2 of intel-microcode, after a boot in "recovery" mode, once the hardware has been properly initialized, "normal" boot no more hangs. The problem shows again only after a full shutdown of the computer, with power switched off.

One more detail: when powering up the computer with version 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2 of intel-microcode, contrary to what I first had thought, removing "quiet" or "splash" from the linux boot command line doesn't help: the boot process then still hangs. As explained above, what helps is to first properly initialize the hardware by booting in "recovery" mode.

Any fix available for intel-microcode against version 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2?

That bug is far older than the problematic version of intel-microcode

You might check whether issue 43 or 44 (currently the top two) of
https://github.com/intel/Intel-Linux-Processor-Microcode-Data-Files/issues
covers the problem that you have.

My current meta-workaround is to hold intel-microcode to version 3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2.

As said above, it is unfortunately impossible to downgrade the package with:
  sudo apt install intel-microcode:amd64=3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2

Instead, I must first download
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/483718725/intel-microcode_3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2_amd64.deb
found on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/focal/amd64/intel-microcode/3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2
then issue:
  sudo apt install ./intel-microcode_3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2_amd64.deb

I then prevent the package from being automatically upgraded by marking it as held back:
  sudo apt-mark hold intel-microcode

Hopefully, at some point, a new version of intel-microcode will fix the problem found in 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2.

Does anyone have any insight on such upcoming fix?

Comments:

A downgrade with an apt command could have been possible only with an older version, with the command
sudo apt install intel-microcode:amd64=3.20180312.0~ubuntu18.04.1
(Usually only the initial version from publication time of the Ubuntu release and the newest one are available with such commands)

There is another bug report bug #1904733 which I think is more relevant than bug #1858810

Removing the link to bug #1858810 because the latter is indeed much older than my problematic intel-microcode version.

Adding a link to bug #1904733 because it is related to the same version of intel-microcode package.

However, contrary to bug #1904733 report, in my case, it is the cold boot that hangs with intel-microcode 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2.

A warm boot after a recovery boot will succeed on my machine.

Can you help with this problem?
