In the above object the color or pattern gets filled in the area outside the object.
How to fill color or pattern in the above object?

The above object being enclosed yet the color gets filled outside, how to fill color?

It is difficult to answer (beyond guessing) based on the screenshot - could you make the SVG file itself available? The free image hosting service <http://imgh.us/> accepts and serves SVG files.

In general, to fill a path with a pattern (as with a solid color or a gradient), the path needs to enclose the area. From the screenshot, it seems that you applied the pattern fill to a 'U'-shaped path at the inner side of the object (open at the top), instead of a path that circumscribes the object itself: <http://imgh.us/q163002-pattern-fill-2.svg> (save the SVG file and open it in Inkscape).

Alternatively (if your drawing is based on an imported bitmap image, you could use the Paint Bucket tool in Inkscape:
<http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Bucket.html>

Fill the closed area of the object with a solid color, and then change the fill attribute of the path created by the paint bucket tool to a pattern of your choice (either from the stock pattern shipping with Inkscape), or create your own pattern:

Can you help with this problem?
