Boot fail: Loading initial ramdisk... Error: Out of memory

Asked by Mengyao Xie

Hi all,

I want to upgrade the system's kernel version to 4.20.

After compiling the Kernel 4.20, I update-grub and reboot. However, boot failed, it says: "Loading initial ramdisk... Error: Out of memory".

I can successfully boot the system by using the old kernel version.

So, how to fix this problem?

Which Ubuntu release are you running?
How much memory does the system have?
Why do you want to upgrade to an unsupported version of the kernel?
If you want to upgrade to a newer version of the kernel, why not version 5.0.0 (e.g. from the Linux-hwe packages, no compilation needed)?

What is the output of the following commands:

lsb_release -crid
free -m
