missing session menu

Asked by ealthuis

Just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10, the session menu on the top right of the panel is hidden., it does work but cannot be seen. How do I bring it over to the left, so it is visible?

Is the whole right side of the screen cut off (for example, including the very rightmost portions of the desktop)?

No just the icon is gone, all other screens i.e. Firefox show completely. the screen is 20", set to 1440X900 (16:10), I will change to 1280X800(16:10). Icon still does not show. No matter what I set the screen resolution to --- no icon.

Where do you click to bring up the indicator-session menu? Is there a blank space where the icon should be? When you bring up the menu, does the menu itself (just not the indicator-session applet icon) appear fully and correctly?

 On the panel I push the mouse pointer to the very right of the screen, and the menu drops down, it is very skittish, but I can click on any of the items in the menu and yes it is complete. The icon itself is not visible at any time. There is no blank space, the panel ends with the last letter of my name.

Further to my answer, when the mouse pointer is at the right I click on what should be an icon and the above happens. Still, there is no space to the right of my name.

This sounds very much like a bug. I recommend reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully, then searching to see if this bug has already been reported, then initiating the process of reporting it by invoking ubuntu-bug with the PID of the running indicator-session-service process (that should make sense once you've read the ReportingBugs page).

This might be a problem with unity-panel-service rather than indicator-session-service, but I'd start with a report against indicator-session (via indicator-session-service's PID) and see what comes of it. The bug can always be reclassified against unity if that is found to be appropriate.

Your bug should be complete and self-contained, such that it is not necessary for Ubuntu developers to look at this question in order to fully understand and appreciate the problem. However, you should still link the bug to this question, using the "Link existing bug" link on this question page.

@mabundza

@ealthuis
I see that you did not actually follow the procedure I recommended for reporting the bug. That's OK...I'll put a specific request for it in the bug, with instructions for providing it.

(To clarify, what I have requested in the bug is the missing information...but the actual procedure you'll use to provide it at this point is different from what I described here, so you should follow the procedure detailed in the bug instead.)
