How to enable global menu support?

Asked by Thomas Bollmeier

I have written a simple location finder application. It can be configured to have a menu. However when launched in Unity the menu does not show up in the panel but sticks to the application window. Although this is fine for me - as I actually do not like global menus;-) - I would like to integrate my application better into the Unity desktop. So my question is:

What do I have to do as an application developer to support a global menu in the panel? The application is written in C /GObject and uses GTK as UI library.

Another idea would be to make your appmenu recognized as indicator.
Like the first example there by Florian Diesch (german ubuntuusers.de).
