Is it possible to create indicator applets for Java applications?

Java applications like Wuala, JDownloader and others currently lack support of an indicator applet and instead use the old tray icon. Is it possible for developers to switch to an indicator applet without much work? Before i contact developers and create a feature request, i would like to ask here if it is possible at all and if so, if any Java application has been ported to indicator-applets already.

I don't see why they can't be made to use notify-send, should be possible
